National Pet Month – Black Beauty

May is National Pet Month so here are some famous pets in literature.

Black Beauty

Black Beauty is a novel written in 1877 by Anna Sewell as a fictional autobiography of a horse named Black Beauty. It’s a great book for children teaching about animal welfare and treatment as well as kindness and empathy. I have a deep love for horses since I was little and read this book multiple times as a child. It’s a great story that touches your heart in so many ways and shows you the importance and value of treating others well. It was definitely an inspiration to me growing up and my feelings towards the treatment of animals.

National Pet Month – Rabbit (Winnie-the-Pooh)

Rabbit – Winnie-the-Pooh

Rabbit is the take charge cautionary one of the group of characters in Winnie-the-Pooh story. He can be bossy at times but has good intentions with his ways. He’s a character that I loved, but doesn’t often get the attention that some of the other characters of the Hundred Acre Wood do. While most of the characters in the story are based on stuffed animals owned by Christopher Robin, rabbit appears to be more like an actual living rabbit. He and Owl often play the sound of reason amongst the other characters in the story bringing almost a “straight man” element to the silly world of Winnie-the-Pooh.

National Pet Month – Buck (Call of the Wild)

May is National Pet Month so here are some famous pets in literature.

Buck – Call of the Wild

Buck is a mutt St Bernard living happily with a family in California as a pet. He’s then stolen and sold where he’s shipped to Seattle and eventually makes his way to the Klondike region of Canada as a sled dog. Buck faces many different trials with nature, human, and canine. It’s a story I read several times in school and loved each time for its insight into another time in history and people through the eyes of one dog.

National Pet Month – Wilbur (Charlotte’s Web)

May is National Pet Month so here are some famous pets in literature.

Wilbur – Charlotte’s Web

Charlotte’s Web is a children’s book by E.B. White about a pig named Wilbur and his unique friendship with a spider named Charlotte. This book is considered one of my ‘must reads’ for children. It has a bitter-sweet story that can touch the heart of everyone. An animated movie of the book was created in 1973 and later a live action/CG character version starring Dakota Fanning was released in 2006. I have not see the latter movie but the animated movie was a staple “sick day” movie in my house.
