Friday Book Recommendation – 1984
1984 is a dystopian novel written by English author George Orwell in 1949. The book follows Winston Smith a man who lives in Airstrip One, formerly Great Britain, within the nation of Oceania in a world that is perpetually at war. With an omnipresent government that monitors all activity of its citizens, in particular those who are members of the middle class, the “Outer Party.” The government attempts to control all aspects of life, history and media within its borders and ensuring that all its citizens toe the line. The novel gave birth to many concepts now used within Western culture such as “Big Brother” and “Thought Police.” The techniques of re-education/thought control can be seen in many subsequent science fiction media including Clockwork Orange and episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation. This book addresses several issues we still face today including censorship, nationalism, surveillance of the public and power of government over its population.
